Summer in Canada/ Ontario Road Trip I

Zurück in Toronto musste ich erstmal mit dem großen Wetter Unterschied klarkommen, denn hier waren inzwischen 20 Grad. Aber anderesets ist es super Wetter und das  musste dann doch genutzt werden, also gings am Wochenende raus und an den Strand auf Toronto Island oder einfach nur auf einen Drink in den Pub. Am 1. Juli war Kanada-Day. Das ist hier der Nationalfeiertag aber gleichzeitig war das auch der Geburtstag von meiner Freundin Clare.

Wir sind also in Kanadas Wonderland gefahren und haben den Tag mit Achterbahnfahren veerbracht und anschließend haben wir uns das Feurwerk in North York angesehen. Entgegen unsere Erwartungen war das aber ziemlich kurz (keine 10 Minuten) aber glücklicherweise hatte ich ein paar Bier im Rucksack und so haben wir uns einfach noch gemütlich ein paar anderen Leuten in den Park gesetzt (ok offiziel ist das hier nicht erlaubt aber wir haben es trotzdem gemacht).

Back in Toronto I had to deal with the huge temperature difference because it was 20 degrees outside. On the other hand I had to use the opportunity and so I went to the beach on Toronto Island on the weekend. The first of July was Canada Day and also my friend Clare’s birthday so we went to Canada’s Wonderland and spent all day on rides. Afterwards we wanted to see the fireworks in North York but sadly they didn’t even go on for 10 minutes. At least I had brought some beer and so we could just hang out in the park with our drinks. (I know its not allowed officially but we did anyways.)

Mitte Juli haben Mara und Kirsten mich aus Deutschland besucht. Wir kennen noch aus der Schulzeit und haben zusammen Fußball gespielt also war die Vorfreude auf den 

gemeinsamen Urlaub schon groß. Wenn man schonmal nach Kanada fliegt will man ja auch so einiges sehen und so haben sie die Gelegenheit genutzt und sind gleich für fast drei Wochen geblieben. Diese Zeit haben wir ziemlich gut gefüllt und direkt mal einen Trip durch halb Ontario gemacht. Das war auch super für mich weil viele Orte dabei waren, an denen ich noch nicht war. Natürlich gehörte auch Sightseeing in Toronto dazu und bei der Gelegenheit bin ich auch endlich mal auf den CN Tower hoch.

In July two of my friends from Germany, Kirsten and Mara came for a visit. I have known them for a long time and we used to play soccer together, so we were really looking forward to that holiday. If you come all the way to Canada you have to use the opportunity and try to see as much as you can, so they stayed for nearly 3 weeks. We filled them time really well and made trip through half Ontario. That was even great for me, because I got to see some places I hadn’t been to yet. We obviously also did some sightseeing in Toronto so I finally got to go up the CN tower.

Erster Halt auf unserer Reise war Kingston. Kingston liegt am Lake Ontario und noch bevor wir uns den Ort angesehen haben sind wir direkt mal zu Fort Henry gefahren. Ja auch Kanada hat ein bisschen Geschichte und Fort Henry ist Teil dessen. Es war ganz unterhaltsam vor allem weil die Mitarbeiter im Fort so tun wären sie britische Soldaten im Jahr 1867. Das Fort ist ziemlich gut erhalten vor allem weil es niemals angegriffen wurde.

Kingston selber war die erste kanadische Hauptstadt und mir haben vor allem die alten Häuser aus dem 19. Jahrhundert gut gefallen.

First stop on our trip was Kingston. Kingston is situated at lake Ontario and even before checking out the city we headed directly for Fort Henry. Yes even Canada can offer some history and Fort Henry is a part of it. It was quite entertaining since all the employees at the fort pretend to be British soldiers in the year 1867. The fort is well preserved probably due to never actually having been attacked. Kingston itself used to be the first Canadian capital and I especially enjoyed the Houses from the 19^th century.

Von Kingston gings weiter nach Montreal und auf dem Weg dahin haben wir eine Schiffscruise durch die Thousand Islands des Lake Ontario gemacht und dank freiem Eintritt auch noch kurz beim Canada Village gehalten. Die Thousand Islands sind viele kleine Inseln auf denen besonderst die Reichen und Prominenten Kanadas ihre Ferienhäuser haben. Das Upper Canada Village ist ein Freilichtmuseum in dem wir uns noch mal einen Eindruck vom Leben in Kanada im 19. Jhd. machen konnten.

After Kinsgton we were driving towards Montreal. On our way we stopped for a ship cruise through the Thousand Islands of lake Ontario and thanks to free admission even at Canada Village (open air museum about life in the 19^th century in Canada). The Thousand Islands are well known for being the holiday area for the rich and famous in Canada.

In Montreal lieben wir zwei volle Tage die wir überwiegend in den gepflasterten Gassen des alten Stadtkerns verbrachten. Obwohl wir uns in Montreal in der französischsprachigen Provinz Quebec befanden, war es übrigens gar kein Problem uns Englisch durch die Stadt zu bewegen. In Montreal hatten wir das erste Mal schlechtes Wetter. Bis dahin hatten wir jeden Tag über dreißig Grad gehabt und als es am letzten Abend anfing zu regnen dachte ich: endlich eine Abkühlung.

Haha da hatte ich mich mal wieder verschätz. Ich hatte ja schon in Toronto einen sogenannten Rain Storm erlebt, bei dem im ganzen Norden Torontos der Strom ausgefallen war und in unsrerem Haus sogar über 24 Stunden. Aber bei dem hatte ich mich nicht draußen aufgehalten. JA und in Montreal waren wir grade unterwegs zum Auto, das keine 10 Minuten vom Haus entfernt war. Nach anfänglichem Tröpfeln hat kurz vor dem Auto so extrem geschüttet, dass wir nach wenigen Sekunden so nass waren als hätte jemand wirklich einen Eimer voll Wasser über uns ausgekippt. Ohne Witz eine Dusche ist harmlos dagegen. Wir waren also klitschnass und sind direkt wieder zurück zum Hotel.

Basilica Monreal

We stayed in Montreal for 2 full days, spending most of the time in the streets of old centre of the city. By the way, although we were in French speaking Quebec, it was no problem to get along with just speaking English. In Montreal we encountered some bad weather for the first time. Until then we had had over 30°C and when it started raining on the last evening I thought: finally a way to cool down. HAH underestimated it a little bit. I had seen a Rain Storm in Toronto before, when all the power in north Toronto went off and our house was without power for over 24 hours, but I hadn’t been outside during that one. YES and in Montreal we were outside just on our way to get the car, no 10 minutes away from our hotel. After some light drizzle it was raining so badly when we arrived at the ca, as if somebody was emptying buckets full of water over our heads. No kidding, a shower is nothing compared to that. Totally wet we drove back to the hotel to get changed.

Unser nächstes Ziel war Ottawa, die Hauptstadt Kanadas. Ottawa hat mir mit Abstand am besten Gefallen. Die Gebäude im Zentrum der Stadt sind einfach schön und natürlich vor allem das Parlamentsgebäude. Dort kann man kostenlose Führungen machen, in denen man Einblick in die kanadsiche Regierung bekommt und natürlich auch in die Regierungsräume. Ziemlich cool. Abends ist im Sommer außerdem immer eine Lichtschau bei der das Parlamentsgebäude bestrahlt wird. Da  Thema war natürlich die kanadische Geschichte, also wieder was gelernt. 

Our next stop was Ottawa, the capital of Canada. I liked Ottawa best by far. The building in the centre of the city are beautiful and most of all the parliament. There are free tours through the parliament building that give you inside in the concept of the Canadian government. Pretty cool. On top of that, every summer there is a light show projected onto the parliament building. The topic this year was Canadian history so I even learned something.
