The weather was beautiful and after squeezing everybody into the small hotel in Qaanaaq (we were 3 people more than beds so Alec, Christian had to sleep on the floor while I took the couch) we went for an afternoon walk to the icebergs. After having been out near the icebergs our hotel host Hans told us that they had seen 2 polar bears strolling around the icebergs right in the same are as the one we went to. Good he told us that afterwards. Hans has quite some stories to tell and the hotel is full of pictures and maps of people that stop at his hotel while exploring Greenland or the Arctic. A really interesting place to be.
Also the view from the hotel into the bay is really amazing and once in a while you can hear the sled dogs howl. Most of the dogs stay out on the ice near the sleds so we passed by some of them on our little walk. Qaanaaq is really an amazing place and I still can’t believe I got to stay there one night and not just stop for fuel. Leaving Qaanaaq we went on to Station North where we dropped off everybody we had picked up in Sach Harbour and Qaanaaq. Altogether 7 people. We didn’t even leave the runway but just fueled and headed on to Alert. Alec and I happy to be back to the basic 5 people Basler crew. Today is our second day in Alert. Yesterday we had a successful survey with 3 planes flying under the CryoSat track.
